FALLS PREVENTION

It happens so fast, often during part of our everyday routine: making toast in the kitchen, cleaning the bathroom sink, walking to the corner mailbox. In an instant, you can lose your balance and fall. The result often brings only a few minor bruises, but as we all know, a fall could bring devastating consequences.

Nationally more than 1/3 of adults age 65 and older fall each year. Here in Minnesota our unintentional fall rate is the second highest in the nation and is nearly twice the national average. With the goal of reducing the number of falls and fall-related injuries, the Minnesota Board on Aging began the Minnesota Falls Prevention Initiative last year with federal grant money. Their recommendations include:

- Exercise - muscle weakness is the leading predictor of risk of falling

- Check your house for hazards (Call us for a helpful checklist)

- Have a nurse or doctor check your medicines – some medications or combinations of medicines can increase your likelihood of falling

- Have your vision checked

-Wear shoes (instead of slippers or going barefoot) both inside and outdoors

- Improve household lighting – try brighter and more energy efficient florescent light bulbs

- Put one of your phones near the floor in case you fall and can’t get up

- Think about wearing an alarm device that will bring help if you need it

- Always get up slowly just after waking up

If you would like more information or help implementing any of these suggestions or if you would like a copy of “A Home Fall Prevention Checklist for Older Adults” please give Jane or Marji a call at Southeast Seniors 612-331-2302.
